Habib U. Jan is from Pakistan.

He was selected for the award of EU PhD fellowship as Early Stage Researcher (ESR) in an open International competition. He is working as Marie Curie Early Stage Researcher (PhD Student) in the lab of Prof.Dr.Rod Snowdon at Justus-Liebig University (JLU) Giessen,Germany under the Marie Curie INTERCROSSING programme which is INnovative Training Environment for Researchers Combining the Resources Of Statistical Science, Informatics N& Genetics.

Current research Interests

The title of his PhD project is "Genome-wide Prediction of agronomic traits in hybrid Rapeseed (Brassica napus) using single-nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) markers".

During his project,he will test genomic prediction statistical models for higher accuracy and will select the best parental combinations which could give high heterosis! He will use both phenotypic (field) and genotypic data (Single Nucleotide Polymorphic markers).Habib will also work on genome-wide association mapping using SNP marker data to correlate these molecular markers with heterosis for different traits in canola.


They are collaborating with the commercial partner i.e. NPZ Lembke (Germany) and academic partner Prof.Richard Nichols (Professor of Genetics) and Andrea Hatlen (ESR) in Queen Mary, University of London.

Previous Academic Background and Awards

  • Habib did his Bachelor (Honours) in Animal Sciences and M.Sc (Hons) in Animal Breeding & Genetics from KPK Agricultural University Peshawar,Pakistan.He was among the top three students during his studies in Pakistan and awarded Bronze medals in both Bachelor and Master respectively.

  • He is the recipient of European Master scholarship under Erasmus Mundus (M.Sc in Animal Breeding & Genetics) executed at BOKU, Vienna (Austria) and AgroParisTech,Paris (France), session 2009-2011. During his European Master thesis, he worked in the lab of Biology, Development and Reproduction (BDR) INRA Jouy-en-Josas (France) under Dr.Amelie Bonnet-Garnier and Dr.Nathalie Beaujean.

  • He worked on the ribosomal RNA genes during early embryonic development (both embryos and oocytes).

  • He is also the recipient of EU funded Marie Curie PhD scholarship under INTERCROSSING 2012.
